The Oral Legacy of the Cult of San Benito Agé: Identity, Time and Space in the South of Lake Maracaibo
Sinopsis
In “The Oral Legacy of the Cult of San Benito Agé: Identity, Time and Space in the South of Lake Maracaibo,” the cultural and spiritual richness of the cult of San Benito Agé in southern Lake Maracaibo is explored, highlighting orality as a key tool to preserve its ancestral memory. Through testimonies of practitioners, the traditions, rituals, and symbols that connect African with Catholic elements are analyzed, revealing a unique syncretism. The research addresses how orality, music, and geographical spaces shape collective identities and cultural resistance. With an interdisciplinary approach, history, anthropology, and geography are interwoven to understand this cultural expression as an act of re-existence in the face of coloniality.
